The Best Way To Sell Your Car
What Is the Best Way to Sell a Car?
It depends on what matters more to you: getting the last dollar, or getting it done quickly and safely. In Orange County you have four real options: sell it yourself, use an online buyer, trade it in at a dealer, or sell to a licensed buyer who comes to you. A private sale can bring the highest price but takes the most time and carries the most risk. The other three trade some price for speed and less hassle.
Below is how each one works, what you are responsible for, and who each option fits. South OC Autos is one of these options, so we will be clear about where we fit and where we don’t.
Four Ways To Sell, Compared
The same questions, answered for each option. Details vary by buyer, so treat the middle columns as how these options usually work.
| Private sale | Online buyer | Dealer trade-in | Licensed buyer (us) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who you deal with | Strangers who answer your listing | A large company, often online first | The dealer you are buying from | A licensed dealer (#94258) |
| How the price is set | You set it and negotiate | Online estimate, final offer after inspection | Negotiated as part of your purchase | A real person prices it from your details |
| Your time | Listing, messages, showings, test drives | Getting a quote, then a drop-off or pickup | Folded into buying your next car | A short meeting, about 15 to 20 minutes |
| Smog certificate | Usually yours to provide | Handled by the buyer | Handled by the dealer | Handled by us |
| DMV paperwork | Yours to complete and file | Handled by the buyer | Handled by the dealer | Handled by us |
| If you still owe on it | Hard to arrange with a private buyer | Usually handled | Usually rolled into the new deal | We pay your lender directly |
| How you get paid | Whatever the buyer brings | Set by the company | A credit toward your purchase | Cashier’s check before the car leaves |

Selling It Yourself
A private sale is where you are most likely to get top dollar, because you sell straight to the next driver. The cost is your time and some risk. You write the listing, answer messages, meet strangers, handle test drives and decide whether the payment is real.
In California the seller is generally responsible for providing a valid smog certificate, and you need to file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the DMV within 5 days of the sale. If you still owe money on the car, the lender holds the title, which makes a private sale harder to close.
Good fit if
- You want the highest possible price
- You have time to list and show the car
- The car is paid off and the title is in hand
- You are comfortable handling payment and paperwork
Selling to an Online Buyer
National online buyers let you enter your car’s details and get an estimate in minutes. The estimate is not the final number. The offer is set after the car is inspected, and it can change.
They handle the paperwork and usually the loan payoff. Depending on the company, you either drive the car to a location or schedule a pickup.
Good fit if
- You want a quick online estimate to start
- Your car is newer and in common demand
- You don’t mind the number changing at inspection
- A drop-off or pickup appointment works for you
Trading It In at a Dealer
If you are buying your next car anyway, a trade-in is the simplest path. You hand over the old car and drive away in the new one, with the dealer handling the paperwork and any loan.
The tradeoff is clarity. The trade value is negotiated together with the price of the car you are buying, so it can be hard to tell what you actually got for your old one. It also only works if you are buying from that dealer.
Good fit if
- You are buying another car right now
- Convenience matters more than price
- You want one transaction instead of two
- You are ready to negotiate both numbers
Selling to a Licensed Buyer Who Comes to You
This is what we do. South OC Autos is a licensed California dealer (#94258) that buys used cars, trucks, SUVs, EVs, hybrids and work vans from private sellers anywhere in Orange County, including Anaheim. We mainly buy vehicles worth $5,000 and up with a clean title in your name. See what we buy.
You send the year, make, model and mileage, and a real person prices it, not an automated estimate. We meet you, usually at the bank, and once we meet it takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Smog and DMV paperwork are on us. If you still owe money, we pay your lender directly and you get the difference. You get a cashier’s check before the car leaves. Here is how it works, step by step.
Good fit if
- You want a real offer without listing the car
- You don’t want strangers or test drives
- You still owe money on the car
- You are not buying another car from a dealer
